To celebrate harvest and the game season, Hibiscus and I are hosting an autumnal wine dinner with one of the elite, traditional houses of Piedmont for whom wine is all about quality and a respect for terroir (both in the cellar and vineyard).
At just 30 years old, the 5th generation Luca Roagna already has 13 (going on 30) vintages under his belt, and now runs the estate under the watchful eye of his father – Alfredo Roagna. Unlike the vast majority of producers of his era, Alfredo steered away from the dark arts of showmanship, marketing, technology and new oak, choosing instead to stick to historic Barbaresco and Barolo traditions. The results are stunning.
Great nebbiolo is profound with a dried rose petal perfume and balsamic notes. Roagna’s 2 crus are no exception. Both its pale, fragrant Rocca e Pira in Barolo and his flagship Crichet Paje from the heart of Barbaresco, are delicate but framed by powerful tannins. They are textbook examples of Barolo and Barbaresco at their best.
Luca Roagna and his estate were featured earlier this year on BBC Radio 4’s Food Programme and now Luca is coming to London for supper. We’d be delighted if you could join us for a four-course Hibiscus creation designed to highlight these wines.
