I recently bought a mixed lot of old Gramenon bottles. This was a real chameleon of a wine and probably the most transformative wine I have had in a long time. When I initially poured it, there was nothing coming out of the glass and it was pretty hollow on the palate with no aromas at all. It tasted past it and dead. I was beginning to regret getting two cases of it. I had poured it into a Riedel syrah glass to give it plenty of air so I waited 30 minutes and the nose began to reveal violet notes. The palate also began to open up. Within one hour, it was absolutely gorgeous. Opulent, full of violets and rosemary notes with an extremely long finish and silky tannins. It was full of life and mature. This wine will evolve for a few more years.
Tasted on the 26th and 27th February 2011.
